Volunteer Docents
The Hall of Health has an ongoing need for volunteer docents. Docents interact directly with the public to maximize the effectiveness of the Hall's programs and to provide a rewarding, educational experience for all visitors. Primary responsibilities include the following:
- Directing visitors
- Explaining exhibits
- Showing videos
- Leading discussions
- Giving presentations to groups of children
- Preparing exhibits for visitors (reassembling models, resetting computers, etc.)
Approximately half of the Hall of Health docents lead discussions and give presentations. Docents take on these responsibilities only when they feel ready to do so. Training and scripts are provided.
Additional responsibilities may include such tasks as answering phones, making reservations for groups, and answering e-mail.
Qualifications: patience, flexibility, congeniality, interest in working with the public in general and with children in particular, knowledge of (or interest in learning about) the human body. Training is provided.
Minimum time commitment: 48 hours during a six-month period. Most docents fulfill this commitment by working 3 or 4 hours per week.
Volunteer Puppeteers
Puppeteers perform in five to eight Kids on the Block puppet shows annually at the Hall of Health and Children's Hospital Oakland. No previous experience is required.
Click here for more information about the Kids on the Block program.
Interns
Interns working 10 hours or more per week at the Hall of Health do special projects related to their interests in health education. For example, interns have helped with exhibit design, curriculum development, and program evaluation.
The Hall of Health does not pay interns. They either receive academic credit for their work or are paid by their sponsoring institution or organization.
All volunteers and interns at the Hall of Health must apply through Volunteer Services at Children's Hospital and Research Center Oakland. Information can be found at www.childrenshospitaloakland.org.
